Bemidji Senior Abby Kelm won her opening match in the State Girls Tennis tourney yesterday, beating Maple Grove ‘s Zoe Adkins 6-2, 6-3 to move into the quarterfinals, where she face the #3 seed, fellow senior Meagan Brown of Elk River. She fell in straight sets 6-4, 6-0 suffering her 1st loss of the year and ending her season and career.

The Lumberjack Boys took 4th out of 16 teams at the Section 8AA meet in Fergus Falls yesterday, while the girls were 7th out of 15. But 4 Lumberjack runners are headed to the state meet, led by senior Sadie Hamrin who won the individual Section championship in the girls race. Soren Dybing, meanwhile, led the Lumberjack boys with a 9th grade finish while Riley Berg finished 12th. Both were among the 8 at large spots for the state meet. Kayla Dewitt, meanwhile, was 12th and earned an at large bid as well. The state meet will be next Saturday, November 4th at St. Olaf College.

The Lumberjacks are now 4-5 and headed to the Section 8-5A semifinals Saturday night at 7 in Brainerd against the #1 seeded Warriors. You’ll hear it on the LJRN with Lumberjacks Live at 6pm on KBUN-FM 104.5 and kbunsportsradio.com. There’s a fan bus going to the game. It will load at 4:15 and depart at 4:30. UMD 17, Bemidji State 0
The Bulldogs apparently were a little more winterized than the Beavers last night. In a cold, windy, snowy night, The Beavers were held to just 50 yards and turned the ball over 4 times. The difference was in the ground game, where the Beavers managed just 8 yards to UMD’s 223. Neither team reached 50 yards passing.

The Beavers fell to 6-3 on the year and 4-1 in the north as their winning streak ended at 5. UMD is now 7-2 and 5-0 in the north with a 6 game winning streak and a chance to move up from #10 in the super regional. The Beavers will wrap up the home schedule a week from Saturday when they host SCSU at 1pm.

The #4 seeded Bemidji Lumberjacks (14-13) will host a Section 8AAA quarterfinal toight at 7pm in the BHS Fieldhouse. They’ll host #5 seeded Alexandria (15-12), who beat St. Cloud Tech 3-1 in the prelims Wednesday night. The Jacks were actually a couple points behind the Cards in the QRF Ranking, but earned the #4 seed because of their head to head win over Alex in the regular season.

Bemidji State is 2-1-1 on the year and they’ll be back at it this weekend opening the WCHA season at home hosting the Ferris State Bulldogs at 7:07 both tonight and tomorrow night. The Bulldogs come in 2-4-0 on the year. The Beavers are hoping to shake off an ugly 5-1 loss to Air Force last Saturday, the night after a 4-1 win.

Meanwhile, sophomore Zach Whitecloud has been named to Hockey Canada’s National team roster for the upcoming Karjala Cup Nov. 8-12 in Biel Switzerland. The members of that team are part of a larger group of players under consideration for the Canadian Olympic team.

1-6-1 Bemidji State is home this weekend as well, hosting 2-6 UMD. The Bulldogs have lost 6 in a row to Boston College, Ohio State and the Gophers. The Beavers have been swept by #2 Clarkson, #8 Minnesota and #1 Wisconsin on consecutive weekends. Gametimes each day are 3:07 at Sanford Center.

Bemidji State remains unbeaten at 13-0-2. They are ranked #15 in the nation and remain #2 in the Regional rankings. They wrap up the regular season this weekend with a game at UMD tonight at 6pm and the season finale is Sunday afternoon at Chet Anderson Stadium against St. Cloud State. Gametime is 1pm. The NSIC playoffs begin Wednesday with quarterfinal action. High seeds will host through the tournament.

Bemidji State is 3-19 on the year and will finish the season on the road trying for their 1st conference win of the year. Tonight, they’ll be at Sioux Falls at 6pm, and tomorrow at #1 SW Minnesota State at 2pm.
